KLIA Robbery: Police Conducts Interviews

12 April 2008
Sepang

After generating photofits of the robbers involved in the heist at the KL International Airport, police have reason to believe that it was an inside job. Three of six suspects, including a woman, were drawn based on descriptions given by eye-witnesses.

Police have taken statements from 39-year-old Lance Corporal Zainuddin Md Isa, who was injured by a gunfire at the scene, 20-year-old Muhamad Fadzil Amanullah Khan, who was one of the two moneychangers who were robbed.

It is believed that the moneychangers, who were accompanied by two security guards, were escorting the money to two Singaporean businessmen. The money was meant to be transported to Singapore.

49-year-old security guard Ahmad Suhaime Mohd Yussop, 29-year-old Nepali worker Lal Bahadur Shrees and 22-year-old moneychanger Buhakri Abdullah have yet to be interviewed.

Police are looking into the possibility that the suspects are members of famous armed robbery gangs such as Mamak Gang, Deva Gang and Botak Innasi.

KLIA Robbery: Off-duty Policeman Interviewed

11 April 2008
Kuala Lumpur

The 39-year-old lance corporal who was shot three times at the robbery at the KL International Airport will be interviewed to learn more about how the RM3.5 million heist took place on Thursday evening. Lance Corporal Zainuddin Mat Isa, who was shot in his left thigh and on both his hands, is currently warded at the Putrajaya Hospital.

The police officer also lost his semi-automatic pistol when he was trying to stop the robbers. He was at the airport waiting for a friend and was off-duty although he were carrying his pistol. When he heard gunshots he spun around and started firing at the robbers. He dropped to the ground and feigned unconsciousness as he was shot three times. One of the suspects approached him and took his pistol.

Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat explained that as the robbery occurred in a public area, it is not considered a security breach at the KLIA and that Malaysia Airport Bhd should not be held responsible.

Police have enacted the Internal Security and Public Order Department to increase police presence at KLIA while a manhunt is underway to search for the six armed robbers.
