The Form Five student who allegedly send a false short message with information on missing 11-year-old Muhammad Asmawi Jalaludin and extorting RM5,000 from his family was brought from Sabah to aid in investigations.

The 19-year-old man, who just finished his SPM, was picked up from his house in Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday night and underwent interrogation at the Brickfields police headquarters yesterday. Under Section 385 of the Penal Code for extortion, he is suspected of having sent the message to Asmawi’s sister on 12 March 2008 at 1:50pm.

When Asmawi’s sister read the message demanding money for Asmawi’s release, she replied to it asking for time to raise money. She tried to call the mobile phone number several times but no one picked up. The family then lodged a report at the Kerinchi police station.

Asmawi has been missing since 9 March 2008 when he was on his way back to his house in Pantai Permai, Pantai Dalam from a playground 200m away.
