Company Director Charged with Accepting Bribes for Deputy Minister

Mohd Ismail Abdullah, a 52-year-old company director has claimed trial to the charge of four counts of bribery and a charge of accepting a bribe on behalf of a deputy minister and an Umno division. He allegedly accepted RM100,000 for Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Johari Baharum and Kubang Pasu Umno division on 3 March 2007 at 10:15am from 49-year-old Chong Kor Yong.

He had used a company bank account in Taman Sentosa to deposit the amount to prevent Chong Tzeng Hang from being detained under the Emergency Ordinance.

Mohd Ismail was also charged for accepting a RM5,000 bribe from Chong Kor Yong on behalf of Datuk Rosli Abdul Malik and RM10,000 for Shaharuddin Abu Sohot, for the same purpose above.

He also allegedly accepted RM4,000 for himself.

Under Section 10 (a)(aa) of the Prevention of Corruption Act (Act 575), Mohd Ismail faces a minimum of 14 days’ jail and a RM10,000 fine or five times the amount of bribery.

The judge has set bail at RM40,000 and ordered the Mohd Ismail to surrender his passport. The case will be heard on 16 April 2008.
