In response to comments made by a New Straits Times reader on 17 March 2009, Ipoh police chief Assistant Commissioner Azisman Alias said statistics showed that steps were taken to fight crime in Ipoh and that the crime rate there has not increased in the past two years.

He said 5,975 cases were reported in 2007 and 5,549 were reported last year, indicating a 7.13 percent decrease. Azisman said most of the cases have been solved.

The reader had said that Ipoh had become notorious for kidnappings, assaults, burnt bodies being dumped in rubbish sites, violent robberies and shootings.
