Altantuya Murder Trial: 388 Bone Fragments Found

27 February 2008
Shah Alam

388 bone fragments were found at the crime scene where Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu was believed to have been blown up, according to 48-year-old Kuala Lumpur Hospital Forensic Department Head Dr Mohd Shah Mahmood. He had carried out inspections on 7 and 9 November 2006, retrieving fragments of the ribs, spine and neck in a clearing and shrubs on a hill.

Dr Mohd Shah did not find many skin tissue and hair and could not find any human flesh or blood during his two days of inspection.

On 7 November 2006 at 5pm, he conducted tests on the bone fragments and tissue to detect traces of explosives. He referred to x-ray expert Dr Zaleha Abdul Manaf and forensic anthropologist Dr Nurliza Abdullah for details on Altantuya.

Dr Mohd Shah concluded from the tests that an explosive had caused injury to the bones and cause it to break into fragments which were scattered in the area. He explained that the spine was intact because it was heavier and larger and that Altantuya was lying on her back causing the explosion on her chest to press the spine further into the ground.

Earlier in court, Lance Corporal Mohamad Ruzaimi Ramli said he was verbally ordered by his superior officer, Superintendent Amidon Anan to destroy all excess negatives in the film rolls used at the crime scene. He said he took 268 photographs on 7 and 9 November 2006, printed them and handed them to Amidon. 8 negatives were not used and were destroyed as ordered.

When called to the stand by counsel Ahmad Zaidi Zainal who is representing accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, crime scene investigation unit and police forensics laboratory head Amidon denied making such an order and having any knowledge of the excess negatives.

The trial continues today.
