Four policemen from the Nilai police station have been suspended of their duties pending investigations on the alleged assault of an Indonesian karate expert. Statements were taken from them and they were given their suspension notices yesterday.

The two constables were in service for less than a year and the lance corporals have been in service for between 5 to 15 years.

On Friday at 2am in Nilai, the four were doing their patrol rounds when they stopped Donald Pieter Luther Kolopita who was walking back to his hotel. Kolopita was the umpire in the Indonesian squad which was taking part in the Asian Karate Championship there between 24 and 26 August 2007.

The four said they stopped the man because he was behaving suspiciously. When they started to question him, Kolopita tried to run away. The men caught him again but Kolopita allegedly punched and kicked them. In his police report, Kolopita alleged that he was handcuffed and assaulted by the four. He was then taken to the Nilai police station and was released only after spending five hours in the lock-up.

Kolopita’s team members and officials from the organising committee brought him to a hospital. He sustained some broken ribs, swollen testicles and swelling on his face.
