Police have made their biggest bust on illegal betting syndicates this year with raids on three bet counting centres which have accepted about RM9 million worth of bets per month in George Town and Butterworth.
Last Wednesday, two men, aged 42 and 55 years, were arrested in connection with a syndicate operating in Air Itam while police seized hundreds of betting slips, 2 computers, 8 facsimile machines, 5 mobile phones and 2 telephones.
On Saturday, police raided two houses in Telok Air Tawar and Jalan Raja Uda in Butterworth and arrested 6 women and a man, aged between 26 and 53 years.
It is believed that the syndicates could rake in RM200,000 worth of bets for each draw. Police have identified the masterminds behind the syndicates.
Under Section 4A(a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953, the suspects arrested each faces a maximum fine of RM200,000 or a maximum jail term of 5 years, if convicted.
