Parti Keadilan Rakyat information chief Tian Chua was arrested for attempted murder after he almost hit a man when he drove his car through a barricade during a demonstration. The demonstration was supported by Chua and some politicians, who were against the demolition of houses at Kampung Berembang yesterday.

Workers from Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd were at a barricade set up at the entrance of the demolition area when Chua drove his Toyota Camry through it at 11:40am. One of them who was doing some welding work there fell but managed to escape by leaping out of the way of the car. This worker later lodged a police report.

Police has classified this case as attempted murder and is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code.

The 44-year-old opposition politician now faces a possible 20 years in jail.

The demolition work started on 17 November 2006 when the villagers refused to move out after receiving eviction notices since November 2005.
