Committee chairman Datuk Dr Wan Hashim Wan Teh from the Parliamentary Select Committee on Integrity said yesterday that contrary to popular belief, 80% of the crimes were committed by locals and not foreigners.

He told reporters that there have been cases when local criminals used an Indonesian slang to fool people into thinking that they are foreigners.

Dr Wan Hashim said that although it was natural for the crime rate to rise as the population grows and more foreign workers migrate to the country, the growth of the police force has not been trending up. The current ratio is one policeman to between 500 and 1,000 people, which is below the expected ratio of 1 to 250.

He added that the Government’s plan to recruit 60,000 policemen over the next five years will not be adequate to meet the growing police force demand.
