Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam said the Home Ministry intends to increase the volunteer police reserve from Rela and the Civil Defence Department to 2.8 million by 2012, a 100% increase. He said this is to increase the visibility of police forces in public and help achieve 20% decrease in street crime rate.
The ministry is in discussions with government-linked companies (GLC) and the private sector in working together in areas of security. Some GLC members are undergoing training, of which 10% of them will have police powers by next month.
Members of neighbourhood watches and national service graduates may also be asked to join forces.
