A young couple from Taman Skudai Baru whose 17-month-old girl was admitted to the Puteri Specialist Hospital but died on the way there, have been remanded by police to assist in investigations. It is believed that the girl, Chin Shyan Ping, probably died as a victim of abuse as there were multiple injuries and bruises over her body and face.

The 18-year-old mother and 22-year-old father had earlier sent her to a clinic on Wednesday at 8:30pm, citing breathing difficulties. As the doctor did not have the suitable equipment to treat the victim, they were advised to send her to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

Instead, the parents brought her to the private hospital but she died on the way there. The girl’s body has been sent to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for the post-mortem.

The mother then lodged a police report at the Johor Baru (North) district police headquarters at about midnight yesterday, claiming that her daughter’s injuries were caused by a fall and hot water that had spilled onto her. However, the doctor at the Puteri Specialist Hospital indicated that the injuries on her body suggests that she was physically abused.

The couple has been detained under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The victim was brought up by her grandmother who lives in Cha’ah, Segamat. She had a 5-month-old sister, who is being taken care of by the father’s parents. When the grandmother’s health deteriorated, she sent the girl back to her parents who lived in a rented room of a shophouse in Taman Skudai Baru. They had moved into the room about two weeks ago.

Police are awaiting the results of the post-mortem.

Yesterday was day 24 of the murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, who was shot and blown up using explosives last October.

Bukit Aman chief interrogator Deputy Superintendent Zainudin Abdul Samad told the court yesterday that accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri revealed he had a lover, Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan, during an interrogation session on 2 November 2006. Azilah also told Zainudin that he had spent the first five years in the police force as an investigating officer in the Sepang police district before joining the Special Action Force (UTK).

Zainudin said Azilah and himself were involved in a special assignment in Penang last year for two and a half months and met each other a few times. They did not interact with each other as they were carrying out covert operations. However, when Zainudin was cross-examined by Hazman Ahmad, counsel for Azilah, he denied that he was biased in his interrogations with Azilah since he knew him beforehand. Zainudin also denied that he had induced, threatened or made any promises to Azilah during the 5-day interrogation. He said he did not threaten to arrest Roslan.

Hazman further grilled the 21st prosecution witness by asking Zainudin if he knew that second accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar had been brought back from Pakistan on 6 November 2006 by UTK second-in-command Asst Comm Mastor Mohd Ariff, which he admitted he did not.

The court then heard Zainudin say that he could not recall the exact number of passengers and their identities in the four-wheel-drive vehicle which he was in together with Azilah when they were heading to the crime scene in Puncak Alam. He said he could only remember that Chief Inspector “Koh Fei Cheow was sitting in the backseat together with Chief Inspector Azilah and a few other policemen.”

Zainudin then denied that he made and received any calls on his mobile phone while en route to the crime scene to get directions to the location.

Hazman then questioned Zainudin on whether he still had his official investigation diary from nine months ago. Zainudin replied that he could not recall where it was and was not aware how long it must be kept before it could be replaced. He admitted that he had been careless in not recording details of the discovery of the crime scene when they went there.

Hazman suggested that Zainudin was trying to suppress evidence by not taking notes but when Zainudin was later examined by deputy public prosecutor Tun Abd Majid Tun Hamzah, he explained that it was because he was not on official duty.

Zainudin could not explain why his name was left out of Koh’s police report on the discovery of the crime scene, which was in contradiction to Koh’s earlier testimony that the exclusion was because Zainudim had told him that there was no need to include his name.

28-year-old Lor Siew Bee has reported to the police about her 23-year-old Indonesian maid, who allegedly abused the housewife’s 6-month-old baby boy. The maid has been working for Lor for 4 months.

Lor found a swell on the forehead of her son, Teoh Kyean, after she returned home from shopping on Sunday. The maid apparently said that he had knocked his head on the floor while trying to turn over. Lor and her 30-year-old husband later took their son to a private hospital in Burma Road where the doctor detected a fracture in his leg.

Lor lodged a report at the Patani Road police station on Tuesday, while police had sent the maid to the Indonesian Consulate in Burma Road after some questioning.
