Telecoms Executive Arrested for Selling Pornographic SMS

A 34-year-old former telecommunications executive has been remanded by the police on suspicion on making RM11 million selling pornographic video via SMS. The suspect was arrested at his house in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, by police from the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department on Tuesday at 10pm.

It is believed that after he was suspended by his company, he had used company resources to charge RM3 for each pornographic video that lasts about three minutes.

A police officer said that the suspect made RM4,000 monthly and was able to buy Porsche and BMW cars.

The suspect is under a three-day remand at the Jalan Duta Court Complex since yesterday and his case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or network service.

Home Ministry Targets 20% Reduction in Street Crime

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said that the country is expected to reduce the street crime by 20% by the end of this year. Earlier this year in January there was a 13% decrease compared to the previous month.

Hishammuddin is the lead minister responsible for meeting the crime reduction target, one of the six National Key Result Areas set by the Government earlier. He also noted that snatch thefts, robberies and gang robberies without the use of firearms drop by 7.6% in the fourth quarter of 2009 compared to the previous quarter.

The Home Ministry also hopes to reduce the overall crime rate by 5%.

Since Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the Government Transformation Programme, 4,000 security personnel from various agencies have been enabled at 50 crime hotspots in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor and Penang.

Federal CID Director Comm Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin believes that the public can help the police to improve the national crime prevention work by providing valuable intelligence.

Volunteer Police Force to Increase 100 Percent by 2012

Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam said the Home Ministry intends to increase the volunteer police reserve from Rela and the Civil Defence Department to 2.8 million by 2012, a 100% increase. He said this is to increase the visibility of police forces in public and help achieve 20% decrease in street crime rate.

The ministry is in discussions with government-linked companies (GLC) and the private sector in working together in areas of security. Some GLC members are undergoing training, of which 10% of them will have police powers by next month.

Members of neighbourhood watches and national service graduates may also be asked to join forces.
