Taxi Driver Rapist Nabbed

18 February 2009
Kuala Lumpur

The taxi driver who recently raped a 28-year-old clerk and later asked to her to pay for the taxi fare, has been arrested at a hospital where he was spotted by members of the public on 11 February 2009.

The 31-year-old suspect, who is believed to be responsible for raping at least 7 women in the Klang Valley, was at the hospital seeking treatment for injuries sustained in a drug deal gone bad. He is also suspected to be a drug dealer.

Police said he was not a taxi driver and the taxi that he used was reported stolen in Kuang, Rawang. The stolen taxi has since been burnt by the  other party involved in the drug deal.

Authorities have received only 2 reports of rape so far and urged all other victims to come forward. The suspect has been remanded for one week to aid investigations.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Verdict Set April 9

17 February 2009
Shah Alam

Submissions continued in the High Court trial of the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu on Tuesday when the defence lawyers saying that guilt of the two accused, Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, have been proven beyond all reasonable doubt.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Manoj Kurup began by saying that Azilah did not dare call for his alibi witness and Azhar did not dare testify under oath.

Manoj said Azilah had “selective memory” when giving his testimony and that he sought help from Azhar, whom he had known for four years, to execute Mongolian Altantuya. “Despite the friendship, he (Azilah) could not remember the mobile number of his close friend (Azhar),” he said. Instead, Manoj said Azilah had no difficulty recalling the contact numbers of political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, DSP Musa Mohd Safri (a minister’s aide-de-camp) and others.

With Azhar, Manoj said that the finding of Altantuya’s jewellery, watch and DNA in his jacket and bloodstains on a pair of slippers found in his jeep “demolishes his (Azhar) statement that he has nothing to do with her murder”.

High Court judge Justice Mohd Zaki Md Yasin has set 9 April 2009 for the verdict to be given to the accused.
