Network Sales Scam Busted

A couple who have been cheating people of working as sales agents to sell imported fashion accessories have been arrested by the police.

They took deposits of between RM1,688 and RM12,000 acting as membership fees from victims since May 2006. More than 100 people have been cheated of about RM800,000. The scam was exposed when nine of the victims lodged police reports.

The offence is classified as criminal breach of trust under Section 409 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 20 years with possible whipping and a fine upon conviction.

Couple Arrested for Supplying Prostitutes

A couple has been arrested by the police for managing prostitutes at an entertainment centre in Penampang on Monday. This follows seven Filipino women, aged between 19 and 27, who escaped from there on January 7 2007.

The local man, aged 38, and the Filipino woman, in her 20s, kept the women at a house and ferried them to a nightclub in Penampang daily for paid sex. The couple had promised the women that they would be paid high salaries working as waitresses.

The women later met a a local Filipino who helped them to inform the Philippines embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Major Pirated DVD Network Struck

Penang

A mother and son team who were part of a major pirated DVD distribution network have been arrested. Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs enforcement staff also seized RM140,000 worth of discs from a condominium unit at Fettes Park yesterday morning.

2,500 DVDs were found in the condominium and 6,000 more were placed in a Proton Perdana at the car park.

The offence under the Copyright Act 1987 law carries a fine of between RM2,000 and RM20,000 per infringing copy or five years’ jail or both.
