Home Drug Distribution Syndicate Busted

2 April 2010
Kota Kinabalu

A samurai sword was among the various items police found during an operation in Taman Grand Melinium suspected to have a drug distribution syndicate. Officers from the state Narcotics Crimes Investigations Department managed to bust the five-member syndicate at about 2:50am yesterday.

Acting on a tip-off, the officers went to a house in the housing estate and ordered a man seated in a car outside the house to alight. The man proceeded to drive off but rammed into a policeman’s car. When he tried to flee from his car, the officers arrested him. Another suspect rushed out of the house, armed with the samurai sword and threatened the officers who had to draw their pistols.

The suspect ran back into the house while the police stormed in to find the armed suspect with a couple and a Thai female national.

Various types of drugs, from heroin to marijuana, worth about RM10,000, a Toyota Camry car and the samurai sword were seized by the police. It is believed that the house served as a packing and distribution centre for drugs like syabu, ketamin and various psychotropic pills.

The five suspects, aged between 23 and 37 years, are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the death penalty upon conviction.

Crime Rate Drops 20 Per Cent in Q1

2 April 2010
Shah Alam

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Noor Azam Jamaludin said yesterday at the 203rd Police Day celebrations that the crime rate in Shah Alam has been reduced by 20 per cent compared to the same period last year.

894 cases have been reported so far this year, compared to 1,151 cases reported between January and March last year. Noor Azam said majority of the cases are petty thefts, of which 60 per cent are motorcycle thefts and the rest are house break-ins and shop robberies.

He said the drop in crime rate was due to increased police patrols, crime prevention programmes and public collaboration. He believes the index can be further reduced if the communities practise safety habits like ensuring vehicles and homes are locked before leaving for work, and not leaving handbags on the passenger seat of cars.

Community policing programmes in neighbourhoods will be further used to foster a better relationship between the police and community this year.

Altantuya’s Father Ordered to Deposit RM60,000

31 March 2010
Shah Alam

Judicial commissioner Datuk Zaleha Yusof has ordered Shaariibuu Setev, father of murder victim Altantuya Shaariibuu, to deposit RM60,000 into two bank accounts belonging to the government and co-accused former political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda as security for cost. This amount was for the RM100 million suit filed by Setev against Razak, the government and two former police officers involved in the case.

Setev has three months to comply or his suit would be dismissed.

Earlier, Razak and the government had filed applications for security to cover costs in the suit. Razak asked the court to order Setev to provide RM250,000 while the government asked for RM1 million.

Karpal Singh, counsel for Setev, said he would ask for contributions from Pakatan Rakyat members of parliament and assemblymen as Setev is currently the sole breadwinner for the family.

Setev had filed the suit in June 2007 claiming that Altantuya was financially supporting her two sons, Mungunshagai Bayajargal and Altanshagai Munkhtula, who is mentally challenged. He alleged that the acts by the defendants had resulted in the family incurring loss and damages and is seeking exemplary and aggravated damages.
