A woman in her 20s left a 2-year-old boy at a nasi lemak stall in Kampung Permatang Liku, Air Hitam, yesterday.

21-year-old Mohd Farizam Md Saad who was the stall owner said the woman approached his stall when he was preparing for business at 6:30am. Shortly after, the woman walked off and returned with the boy. She asked the stall owner if he could take care of the boy, who was still sleeping, while she went into Air Hitam to run some errands.

When the woman did not return after two hours, he lodged a police report. The woman was reportedly wearing a blouse and jeans and rode pillion with a male motorcyclist.

Kubang Pasu district welfare officer Syed Rizal Syed Md Baser reported that the boy had bruises on his forehead and left leg. The boy was sent to Jitra Hospital for treatment and to determine if he was physically abused. Further investigations revealed that the boy has been living with his mother and younger sister in Bukit Tampoi, Pokok Sena, some 60km away.

Syed Rizal suspects that the parents are drug addicts who have abandoned their son on purpose. His office would be applying for a 30-day temporary custody under Section 19 of the Child Act 2001 once the boy is discharged, after which he would be sent to the a children’s home in Arau, Perlis.
