Altantuya Murder Trial: Azilah and Azhar Identified at Hotel Malaya

29 November 2007
Shah Alam

Head of Bukit Aman’s Crime Scene Investigation Superintendent Amidon Anan took to the witness stand yesterday, stating that he had identified the two suspects from still images of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage at Hotel Malaya on 18 October 2006 between 4:50pm and 5pm. Murder victim and Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu had stayed in that hotel at that time.

56-year-old Amidon went to Hotel Malaya with investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan on 29 May 2007 to view the hotel’s CCTV archives. Using 8 still images captured from the footage and comparing them with confirmed images, Amidon was able to identify that they were images of Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar.

Amidon also described to the court on the three occasions when he and his team of officers went to the crime scene together with staff from the police ballistic and bomb division, Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) pathology forensic team and the police canine division.

On 6 November 2006, Amidon’s team went there with Azilah and Azhar but it was 8pm and not much investigation work could be done.

The team then went to the crime scene on 9 November 2006 for two days when Amidon headed the investigations. The ballistics team headed by DSP Muhammad Koey Abdullah was ordered to retrieve the remnants of the explosives used in the case. Koey managed to point out the location where Altantuya was placed before she was blown up and marked a 150 feet radius for search purpose.

Four teams headed each by CSI personnel were formed to search, document and collect any biological remains. The teams found tissues, hair, bone fragments, a portion of Altantuya’s vertebrae, a portion of the skull and two teeth. The items were photographed, placed in plastic bags and handed over to Lunggan.

Amidon said several items were sent to the Chemist Department and the forensic pathology unit of HKL for inspection.

The trial continues on Monday.
