Kuala Lumpur

Of the six task forces announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak last year, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein was assigned the crime reduction task force with the goal of reducing street crime by 20 per cent by the end of this year.

Ismail reported that the crimes solved among the total reported last year increased to 47.4 per cent. This was 99,254 cases solved out of 209,417 reported. Property theft dropped by 5,149 cases but violent crime rose by 2,921 cases. Daytime house break-ins increased tremendously compared to the same crime committed at night.

Violent crime rose largely because of the 95 per cent increase in rape cases.

To achieve this year’s target, he said a second batch of volunteer policemen, some 1,533 of them, from Rela and the Civil Defence Department have started their duties at the 50 crime hot spots in the four states on Monday.

Shah Alam

Two Indonesians suspected to be involved in at least 17 robbery cases in Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya have been shot dead in Puncak Perdana yesterday morning. They have been identified as 30-year-old Don and 20-year-old Ferdi.

Yesterday, police were sent to a house in Perdana Heights when a report was made on the two men trying to break in. After a house alarm was set off, the men were on the run.

At a water tank, police found a motorcycle parked there and decided to hide in ambush. The suspects returned to the motorcycle soon after and took out parang when confronted by the officers. Both suspects were eventually shot dead after a short fight.

Police recovered two parang, one screwdriver, one mask, one cap, some watches, mobile phones and cash from the bodies. The bodies were sent to Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for a post-mortem.

The suspects are believed to be part of an armed robbery gang which two other members were shot dead by police last August at Kayangan Heights. They have been reported to have caused hurt to robbery victims.

Seremban 2 Church Hit by Petrol Fire

11 January 2010
Seremban

Sidang Injil Borneo church at Lake View Square, Seremban 2, Negri Sembilan was attacked this morning by a petrol fire. It is the eighth church affected in the latest spate of attacks against Christian churches and schools in Malaysia.

As the first church to be attacked in Negri Sembilan, the state deputy police chief Datuk Abd Manan Mhd Hassan said a man reported the incident when he found the main door of the church with burn marks at 8:30am. Officers from the police department, forensic unit and the Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to the church.

Police believe that the attack probably occurred between 1:30am and 8:30am as a police patrol unit had passed by the area earlier. Fortunately, the fire did not spread into the building.

33-year-old church priest Eddy Marson Yasir said that he was the last person to leave the church the night before at 11:30pm. He added that the church has been in service since 10 years ago and was shocked to hear of the incident from a church member.

It is believed that these recent attacks are related to the High Court ruling on 31 December 2009 that the Catholic weekly Herald had the constitutional rights to use the word “Allah” to refer to the Christian God in their publication.
