25 September 2007
Kuala Lumpur

Police spent a few hours taking statements from taxi driver Jazimin Abdul Jalil and his wife Norazian Bistaman at their home in Wangsa Maju in relation to the kidnap and murder of their 8-year-old daughter Nurin Jazlin Jazimin. Their daughter was kidnapped at a night market on 20 August 2007 and her naked body was found in a sports bag left at a staircase of a shoplot along Jalan PJS 1/48, Petaling Jaya Utama.

Police also said that the result of the DNA test on hair strands found on the body will be released this week.

The house owner of a unit in PJS 1/48 has come forward with clues to the male suspect. The owner had told police that two weeks ago, a man enquired about the unit for himself and his daughter to rent and stay in. When the owner asked him about the daughter, the man replied that he was afraid to bring out fearing that she would be sexually assaulted. The man agreed to the rent, left, but did not show up again.

Based on the information given by this owner, police are able to provide a photo-fit of the suspect.

Charge Against Shearwey’s Mother Possibly Flawed

25 September 2007
Balik Pulau

28-year-old Teh Hooi Wen’s counsel Khoo Chye Beng said that the charge against her is flawed. The mother of murder victim and 3-year-old Shearwey Ooi Ying Ying had made a false report at the Bayan Lepas police station on 6 July 2007 at 10:30am. Under Section 182 of the Penal Code, she faces a maximum jail term of six months or a RM2,000 fine, or both, if convicted.

However, Teh was implicated in the charge that she and her boyfriend Ong Chee Leong, aged 29, had murdered Shearwey on 5 July 2007. Khoo will submit an application with the court against this charge.

The magistrate fixed 23 November 2007 for mention of the case. It will also be on the same day when the court will hear another charge against the two who allegedly consumed methamphe-tamine at the same police station on 9 July 2007 at 1:30am.

Mother Allegedly Locked Daughter as Punishment

25 September 2007
Seremban

The 37-year-old housewife from Seremban 2 had told the state Welfare Department that she had locked her 9-year-old girl in an iron cage behind their house for nine hours as punishment for the girl’s attempt to forge her mother’s signature on a school report card. The girl was locked in the cage from midnight till the next morning.

Both mother and child were at the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital here yesterday when welfare officials visited. Officials said that causing emotional distress or anguish is also a form of abuse under the Child Protection Act, although parents have the right to punish their children.

The housewife admitted that she had also locked her daughter out of the front gate for hours several times for punishment purposes.

There were no physical signs of abuse on the girl. Statements have been taken from the girl, the mother and their businessman stepfather.

Police are waiting for a report from the Welfare Department before they decide on the next course of action.
