Driving Instructors Charged with Accepting Bribes

Six driving instructors and a clerk at a driving school in Ipoh have been charged in court yesterday for soliciting and accepting bribes to allow learner drivers get their probation licenses.

Leong Vun Ling, Omar Ali Bacha and Mohd Ramlan Abd Rahman, K. Palaniappan, Noor Azmi Ibrahim and Othman Omar were intructing at driving schools in Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Johor and Selangor. They are charged for accepting bribe amounts between RM350 and RM450.

The clerk was charged with accepting RM600 to give a 16-year-old boy his probation licence.

Under Section 10 (a) (aa) of the Anti Corruption Act 1997, the suspects face between 14 days and 20 years’ jail and fine of at least five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Road Transport Department Ex-Director Charged with Corruption

The 46-year-old former Kedah Road Transport Department (RTD) director who was charged in the Syariah High Court last week for committing khalwat (close relations) with 27-year-old Education Ministry officer Nurjuliati Juhar, was charged yesterday with four counts of corruption.

Zulkifli claimed trial to charges of:

  1. receiving a room charged for RM427.75 at the Hotel Renaissance on 5 July 2007 at 5pm as gratification from driving school owner Lim Koh Han, 38 years old, in order that the RTD would not take action against Lim
  2. receiving a room charged for RM204.70 at the Concorde Hotel in Jalan Sultan Ismail, which was paid by Lim on 3 August 2007 at 7:20pm
  3. receiving RM1,000 cash from Lim at the Club de Macau, lower ground floor of the Renaissance Hotel on 4 August 2007 at 1:30am
  4. receiving RM17,325.10 cash in entertainment and food expenses from Lim at the same club on 3 August 2007 at 9:40pm

Zulkifli faces a minimum RM10,000 fine or five times the amount of gratification, and between 14 days’ and 20 years’ jail on each of the offences. The total amount of bribery he accepted was RM19,000.

The Kedah Anti-Corruption Agency has seized his passport and the judge granted bail at RM5,000 in one surety and fixed trial on 24 March 2008.

The Syariah Court hearing for the earlier offence has been fixed on 2 October 2007.

Woman Raped by Boyfriend’s Peers

Kuala Terengganu

Four men aged between 25 and 30 years old are wanted by the police to aid in investigations on a rape case of a 19-year-old Indonesian factory worker. The woman was allegedly raped on 28 August 2007 and lodged a police report on Wednesday.

That day, the victim had followed her boyfriend from Klang to Kuala Terengganu. Their car apparently broke down at Karak and she was told by her boyfriend to follow his friend in another car. The friend brought her to the Sekayu recreational area where she was left with a third man who raped her. She was raped again after she had been taken to Taman Kenanga, Kuala Berang.

When the fourth suspect fell alseep, she took off and was sent to the Hulu Terengganu Hospital for a medical check-up.
