30 August 2007
Kuala Lumpur

The Kedah Road Transport Department (JPJ) director and a secretary with the Education Ministry have been charged with committing khalwat (close proximity) by the Syariah High Court yesterday. Zulkifli Othman, aged 46, was found in room number 401 of Concorde Hotel along Jalan Sultan Ismail at 3am on 8 August 2007 with Nurjuliati Juhar, aged 27.

When the Federal Territory Religious Department officers raided the hotel room that morning, Zulkifli was wearing a towel and Nurjuliati was in bed with a blanket. The officers then verified that they were not married.

In court, Nurjuliati pleased guilty and asked the court to be lenient and impose only the fine instead of the two months’ jail. She said she has plans to marry her fiancé and have confessed to him. The judge agreed to impose the fine of RM2,950 only.

Zulkifli’s case has been fixed for hearing on 2 October 2007.
