A 11-month-old baby was physically abused by the 31-year-old Filipino maid of the victim’s employer when they were both alone at their Bandar Sri Damansara home on Friday noon. She was recorded on closed circuit television to have slapped and pushed the baby against a wall.

The baby’s parents had brought their elder child out at around 11:30am and left the baby and maid at home. When they returned at 12:30pm, the parents found bruises on their baby’s face and hands.

The maid denied of any wrong-doing but was later shown the video recording that showed her slapping the baby multiple times and then pushing the baby against a wall.

A police report was lodged by the victim’s mother and the maid was subsequently arrested. The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act for child abuse.

Over a period of three days leading up to the New Year’s Eve, increased police presence helped reduced the crime rate in Penang dramatically. 4,000 enforcement personnel were activated.

Penang police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob announced that there were only 30 reported crime cases during the three days, compared to the daily average of 55.

Ayub said with the police presence, revellers tend to behave in public and did not throw paint at cars like they did in the past. He hopes to maintain the pace in enforcement and target to reduce street crimes by 20% this year.

He also noted that other agencies such as Rela, Civil Defence Department and Penang Municipal Council were helpful in maintaining the order during the festivities.

Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Abu Samah Mat said that the result of the recent campaign against crime known as Ops Sepadu has achieved a 19% drop in the city’s crime rate. He said robberies, vehicle and snatch thefts have been reduced and 2,852 people have been arrested. Among them were 678 foreigners and 59 Mat Rempit.

The campaign involved 450 police officers, assisted by other enforcement agencies, were able to arrest people involved in drug-related offences, fighting, rioting, prostitution and immigration-related offences. 976 knives and dangerous objects and over 200 vehicles were seized as well.

He also said that public feedback revealed that they were affected by the traffic congestion caused by roadblocks and spot checks conducted by the police but would extend the operations until 16 June 2009.
