In an attempt to fight robbers and thieves in the country’s capital, Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Asst Comm II Datuk Ku Chin Wah said city police, traffic, narcotics and special branch officers will conduct a month-long operation covering the districts of Cheras, Brickfields, Dang Wangi, Putrajaya, and Sentul. Roadblocks and round-the-clock police surveillance will be performed by about 400 police personnel.

This is in response to the rising total crime rate this year. 31% of crimes reported this year are unarmed robberies and snatch thefts. 2,254 such unarmed gang robberies were recorded up till 15 April 2009, compared to 1,249 cases in the same period last year, representing a 80% increase. Snatch theft cases jumped two-fold from 606 cases last year to 1,206 this year.

On the first day of its operations, Ku said 1,837 people and 1,089 vehicles were checked. 37 people were arrested, of whom 8 were suspected to be involved in robberies reported in Sentul and Brickfields. The rest were suspected of drug abuse.

Ku urged the public to help report crimes by calling the police hotline at 03-21159999.

A driver with the Civil Defence Corps was sentenced yesterday to 10 years’ jail and 6 strokes of the cane for committing incest on his 14-year-old stepdaughter at their home in July 2006. The 47-year-old man had married the victim’s mother, a widow, 7 years ago.

After his wife went off for work and giving the victim’s younger siblings money to leave the house to buy sweets, the man broke into the girl’s locked room and forced himself onto her. Although she tried to fight her way out, she was hit on the head and then raped.

It was only after 5 months had passed when the girl shared the incident in a letter written to her elder sister. The sister then informed their mother, who lodged a police report against the man on 27 November 2008.

In Sessions Court yesterday, the man pleaded guilty to the charge but asked for a lesser sentence as he had to take care of his mother and his father had passed away half a year ago and his son had gone missing. Deputy public prosecutor Natrah Mohd Yusof added on that since the victim’s biological father had passed away before she was born, the man is the only remaining caretaker.

A 3-month-old baby boy was found dead by the 40-year-old babysitter at her Kampung Bukit Tinggi, Bentong, home yesterday at 8am. The parents of the victim, named Chan Kai Yee, had gone to Hong Kong for a holiday on Monday for a month.

When the babysitter found the baby motionless, she contacted other family members, who brought the baby to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival while the initial medical examination suggested that the cause of death was chest infection.

One of the family members said that when they were at the babysitter’s house, they saw that the baby’s mouth had become purplish black. Thus, the family members lodged a police report at the hospital’s police beat base.
