Deputy Home Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung told the Dewan Negara yesterday that compared to 1,241 rape cases reported in 2007, it was much higher in 2008 at 4,959 cases reported, representing about 300 per cent increase.

It is also noted that in the first two months of this year, there were 769 rape cases.

Meanwhile, there were 4,586 rape suspects detained compared to 4,770 last year. Chor attributed the increase in rape numbers to suspects and victims being drunk and suspects abusing the trust from victims.

In terms of the national crime index, Chor said there were 211,645 cases in 2008, a 1 per cent increase from 209,559 cases in 2007. Among the cases reported, 3,643 involved foreigners in 2007 and 4,883 last year.

For the first two months of 2009, there have been 34,488 cases reported. 45 cases, or 0.13 per cent involved foreigners.

The narcotics department has nabbed 2,080 drug traffickers in 2007 and 2,572 in 2008. 488 drug traffickers had been detained in January and February 2009.

The four Taiwanese chemists who were brought into Malaysia were charged today for trafficking 1,439kg of drugs worth RM61 million. The men are 36-year-old Chung Sheng Wen, 34-year-old Chang Yen Ming, 30-year-old Chang Yung Sheng, and 30-year-old Wu Sheng Yuan. They pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.

They were accused of trafficking Eramin 5 drugs at a factory in 12 Jalan Angkasa Emas 6, Tebrau 2, Johor Baru on 22 March 2009 at 5:30am. Six locals were also arrested during the morning police raid but were released later.

Under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the four face the death sentence if successfully convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Husmin Hussin asked the court for another hearing date pending the results of the chemist report.

Magistrate Hafizah Johor Ariff Johor fixed 3 July 2009 for mention and denied the men bail.

Canny Ong’s killer, 34-year-old Ahmad Najib Aris, has lost his appeal against the rape and murder conviction and continues to face his death sentence. The Federal Court Judge Ahmad Makinuddin said there was adequate circumstantial and forensic evidence to conclude that only Ahmad Najib was guilty for the death of the IT analyst six years ago when her charred remains were found in a manhole near a highway construction site.

The appeal was heard before a bench of five including Chief Judge of Malaya Arifin Zakaria and Federal Court Justices Nik Hashim Nik Ab Rahman, S. Augustine Paul, Hashim Yusoff and Zulkefli.

The charges were that Ahmad Najib, a former aircraft cleaning supervisor, raped and murdered Ong along Jalan Klang Lama on 14 June 2003 between 1am and 5am after she was abducted by him from Bangsar Shopping Centre. Her burnt remains were found in a manhole three days later.

Justice Zulkefli said that the chemist’s report provided circumstantial evidence following the discovery of Ong’s bloodstains on a pair of trousers found in Ahmad Najib’s house. Ahmad Najib was also seen at various locations together with Ong at 7th Mile, Jalan Klang Lama, on the day that Ong was abducted. A DNA test found Ahmad Najib’s semen in Ong’s vagina, proving that the man have had sex with the latter.

Trial judge Datuk Muhammad Ideres Rapee sentenced Ahmad Najib on 23 February 2005 to death and 20 years’ jail time for the charges.
