Prostitutes Caught in Offshore Boat

Marine patrol police busted a prostitution operation on a boat near Tanjung Piai yesterday midnight. Three men, aged between 38 and 46 years, believed to be from Batam, Indonesia, attempted to escape by jumping into the sea were held. Police suspect one of them is the boat captain while the other two were pimps for ten Indonesian women who were also found on the boat.

Police seized the RM4,000 boat and a 40-horsepower outboard motor worth RM10,000.

The women, aged between 21 and 27, were believed to be offered to client ships by paying US$100 to the pimps. They would operate in the areas of Tanjung Piai, Pengerang and Teluk Ramunia.

Former Clerk Cleared of Cheque Scam Charge

Salmi Ishak, aged 30, a former clerk who was sentenced to three years’ jail for assisting to dispose 30 stolen cheques worth RM182,000 through three bank accounts with the SS2 Maybank branch between 8 and 17 September 2003. She was acquitted by the High Court yesterday because there was no evidence that she was aware that the cheques were deposited into her account, together with the accounts of her friends Faziana Shari and Shahrulazha Muhammad.

Salmi was charged on 9 October 2003 with involvement in the RM3 million Penang Treasury cheque scam. The cheques were issued by Maybank Komtar in Penang.

RM1 Million Consignment in Lorry Robbed

37-year-old lorry driver Jamal Ahmad and his 33-year-old assistant Mazlan Baharum were at the Air Keroh, Malacca rest area when their lorry, carrying RM1 million worth of copper, rubber gloves and latex, were hijacked by six men armed with parangs and knives.

At 2am Tuesday, the suspects assaulted the two, broke the driver’s side window, blindfolded and tied the two while they drove the lorry for eight hours. Two of the robbers sat on the victims as they lie on their backs in the rear seats. Two hours later, they were transferred into a car. The car was driven for five hours before the victims were thrown out in Kuang near Sungai Buloh.

The robbers also took the victims’ wallets with RM6,500. When the two had freed themselves, they lodge a report at the Sungai Palong police station.

The lorry was found eleven hours later near a factory in Shah Alam. The copper cargo was missing.
