Thong Yu Tai, a 60-year-old divorcee from Gemenchech, was missing since Tuesday. The lady who worked as a rubber tapper has been found dead in a newly dug pit near her work site by her younger brother and the police. Her motorcycle was placed over the pit.

Thong left her Taman Muhibbah to go to a rubber plantation plant. Her brother was searching for her on Thursday when she had not returned.

Police has remanded a man yesterday to assist investigations.

Mohamad Tamizi Sudin, aged 30, was accused of killing his 4-year-old niece Nor Akmarul Jannah Hasbullah by hitting her head against a wall and causing multiple injuries all over her body. The girl died at the Penang Hospital on January 7.

He is believed to have committed the offence at Desaria Sri Merpati, Tingkat Kenari in Sungai Ara between November 1 2006 and January 7 2007.

The accused, a security guard, was represnted by R.S.N. Rayer, who asked the court to allow Mohamad Tamizi to seek medical treatment as he was allegedly assaulted by police and forced to sign certain documents while under remand. The court magistrate granted the request to send him to Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan.

Mohamad Tamizi’s case has been fixed for mention on Feburary 16.

Abdul Ghani Abdul Karim, aged 31, has been sentenced to 20 years’ jail and four strokes of the cain on each of the two counts of rape. The jail sentences will run concurrently, while he will be subjected to eight strokes in total. He was found guilty of raping a 22-year-old woman twice in his taxi along Jalan Kuchai Lama on June 13 2002.

Ghani has already spent the last five years in jail for raping another woman in Taman Seputeh, which he was sentenced for in 2004.

Deputy public prosecutor Yusaini Amer Abdul Karim said Ghani probably conspired to rape the woman and threatened her with a parang.
