Kuala Lumpur
Sessions Court judge Akhtar Tahir yesterday has sentenced 40-year-old Yim Pek Ha to 18 years’ jail after she was found guilty of three charges of causing grievous hurt to her former Indonesian maid Nirmala Bonat. The former air stewardess was acquitted of a fourth charge of breaking Nirmala’s nose with a steel mug.
Based on the prosecution’s case, pictures and medical reports, the judge found reason to believe that the 23-year-old maid was abused and that her injuries were not self-inflicted.
Yim was charged with causing grievous hurt to Nirmala, then 19 years old, with a hot iron, hot water, and a metal cup at the former’s house in Villa Putera, Jalan Tun Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, in January, March and April 2004. Nirmala suffer red injuries on her breasts, thighs and back.
Lead counsel for Yim, Jagjit Singh said earlier in mitigation that Yim was a first-time offender and has four children to support while Nirmala has recovered with no scars or disfigurement. He later said Yim would file an appeal but had to begin serving her sentence from today.

A 36-year-old Indonesian from Kampung Raja Uda, Port Klang, has been sentenced to 42 days’ jail time and fined RM95,000 yesterday for three counts of soliciting and accepting bribes while posing as a Customs officer. The man, named Joni Efendi Duahmad, pleaded guilty to all charges.
The judge at the Sessions Court ordered that he be deported to Indonesia after serving his sentence and that the bribe money be returned to 61-year-old shopowner Peng Kim Sing. A forged identity card found on Joni is to be sent to the National Registration Department for destruction.
On 28 October 2008, Joni and a Sabaruddin Abu Bakar, went to the shop owned by Peng, posing as Customs officers without any identification. Joni asked for RM10,000 from Peng so that the latter would not be arrested for possessing three bottles of liquor without license.
Peng went to a bank to withdraw RM5,000 and gave it to Joni. They then agreed to meet on 8 November 2008 to settle the remaining amount. On 8 November when the two returned to the shop, Joni was arrested while Sabaruddin managed to escape.

Petaling Jaya
A 44-year-old bomoh has been arrested on 19 November 2008 after a police report was lodged against him for allegedly sexually assaulting a 33-year-old beauty consultant after she consulted him for some treatment.
The woman, a mother of four children, had approached the bomoh in Kuang with her husband and a relative as she felt she was possessed by spirits on 13 November 2008. Apparently, she had screamed loudly while she was attending to a customer at work.
The bomoh brought the woman to a room where she was told to remove all her clothes and to wear a piece of yellow and black cloth. He managed to persuade the woman’s husband and relative to leave and buy incense sticks for a ritual.
After they had left, the bomoh started a chant which caused the woman to be semi-conscious. He then allegedly groped the woman’s breasts and private parts while inserting prayer beads into her vagina. The bomoh continued to chant and gave the woman a bottle of water and an amulet, after which the three left.
The next day, the woman allegedly complained about pain in her private parts. Together with her husband, they confronted the bomoh who kept saying that his actions were normal for the ritual. Later, they lodged a report at the Gombak police headquarters.
The suspect was arrested from his residence at Kampung Melayu Sri Kundang and has been remanded for seven days for investigations.
