Under the national Budget 2008 plan, the government has allocated RM6 billion to fight crime and boost public safety. Inspector-General of the Royal Malaysian Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said that with the largest budget ever given to a government agency, the police “will do everything we can to reduce the crime rate and forge better ties with the public”.

60,000 new personnel will be recruited over the next five years, adding to the current total of RM100,000. This is to achieve the ratio of 1 policeman to 300 people.

To increase police presence in the community, the police will purchase 1,900 motorcycles and 2,000 patrol cars to be provided for investigating officers and their assistants. Each state police headquarters will have a Mobile Forensic Unit. 1,600 new laptops would be set up with the required software and data to perform on-the-spot background checks.

The force will also buy security and surveillance equipment and mobile police stations to help patrol residential and commercial areas.

The police computer system will also undergo a complete overhaul and then global and national interconnections of police databases will be set up. This will improve crime intelligence analysis and sharing of information across states or borders.

A contractor has been arrested on suspicion that he was involved in stealing RM1 million worth of valuables from luxury homes in Batu Ferringhi. Police found twelve paintings, six antique vase stands and a Rolex watch in his house on Thursday.

The 35-year-old suspect was breaking into his neighbour’s house for the second time that day at 2:30pm.

Police believe that the stolen items belonged to a 68-year-old widowed woman whose house was broken into on 22 August 2007. They also found various pieces of jewellery, antique watches, 27 credit cards, a digital camera, a Sheaffer pen and a Dunhill lighter.

28 paintings and a jade collection are missing, which could have been sold off by the suspect.

Petaling Jaya

A 28-year-old consultant director and his company security guard were robbed by four armed men at a petrol station in Kelana Jaya yesterday at 4:30pm.

After withdrawing RM275,000 from a bank in Sea Park which was meant for the employees’ salaries, the director drove to the petrol station to fill up, about 10KM away. As he got off from the car to pay for the petrol, four men armed with parangs pulled up in a Toyota Vios vehicle.

Two men smashed the car windows and one grabbed the briefcase containing the cash at the right rear door. The guard, who was seated at the front passenger seat, pulled out a pistol but the third suspect tried to wrestle it away. He failed to get the pistol and they took off in the car. The guard fired two shots at them but missed.

The suspects are believed to be Indonesians.
