A business administration student studying at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Sungai Long branch, has been found raped and strangled in her Bandar Mahkota house in Cheras. Her body was found lying on her bed half naked and her hands tied behind her back.

Tang Lai Meng was wearing only a t-shirt and a pillowcase was wrapped around her neck. The victim, who was from Taman Wang, Menglembu in Ipoh, Perak, was discovered by a police team at noon who responded to a phone call from a neighbour. The neighbour was walking along the back alley of the terrace house in Jalan Putera 4/1 of Bandar Mahkota at around 11am yesterday when he noticed that the bottom of the back door grille was prised open and some window panes removed. Thinking it could be a burglary case, he informed the police. Police found that the front door and grille were unlocked.

Police believe that Lai Meng had been raped, sodomised and strangled to death with the pillow case. Her wallet was missing. A relative also reported that the victim’s car was also missing. Several different fingerprints were found in the house, suggesting that there was more than one person involved.

Lai Meng’s father, Tang Ah Weng, aged 46, only knew of her daughter’s death when a policeman went to his restaurant in Bandar Baru Menglembu in Ipoh. His relatives had called the Kajang police station and learnt of the murder. Tang had last seen his daughter on 22 July 2007 when she went back to her hometown to collect her examination results from Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kampar. She had just completed a business administration diploma course there.

The body has been sent to the Serdang Hospital for a post-mortem.

Police are now looking for a woman in her 30s and a man in a silver Proton Waja who frequently visit the victim’s house.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Ku Chin Wah said that the 33-year-old woman from Sarawak who was arrested for the murder of the 39-year-old Goh Yoke Seng from Singapore has confessed to the crime. However, police believe that there could be more than one person responsible for the chopping of the man into 11 pieces and stuffed into the refrigerator of a condominium unit in Mont Kiara.

DNA tests have confirmed the identity of the victim by matching blood samples from Goh’s mother and brother in Johor Baru. Ku revealed that the murder weapon had been found but would not say if the woman, who was Goh’s wife, had stayed at the condominium after Goh was murdered. The two were married since 2002 but have had no children.

The High Court yesterday ruled that the statement made by accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar on the place where murder victim Altantuya Shaariibuu was blown up as not admissible evidence.

Prosecution witness ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin told the court that Azhar had told the police that he “can show where the woman was blasted”. Judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin agreed with Azhar’s counsel Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin that Azhar’s statement could not be admitted into court. Azhar allegedly said that when he was taken to the crime scene in Puncak Alam on 6 November 2006.

Zulkarnain said Azhar disclosed that he could show the police Altantuya’s jewellery during an interrogation session at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters on 7 November 2006. Zulkarnain made a police report at 2:30pm the same day, which read, in part, “”I (Azhar) could show the jewellery which belonged to the woman whom I shot at a forest area. The valuables are kept at my house in Kota Damansara”.

Zulkarnain, who was the 23rd prosecution witness of this trial, then said that Azhar said to him: “I kept the jewellery in this jacket”. When Zulkarnain asked him if the black jacket in the closet was the one that he was referring to, Azhar nodded and pointed to the jewellery. Zulkarnain and several police officers had gone to Azhar’s apartment to allegedly retrieve Altantuya’s belongings.

When Zulkarnain arrived at the apartment, a group of men were outside. One of them introduced himself as DSP Yusri from the Special Task Force (UTK), of which Azhar was formerly a member of. He told Zulkarnain that he was there to take some items which belonged to his team. Zulkarnain replied that he could only proceed after their investigations.

Zulkarnain, Azhar and the investigating officers then went into Azhar’s apartment where the jacket was found, together with a Larmes watch, a gold ring with a stone, and a pair of earrings. These items were handed to investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan.

Mohd Zaki then adjourned the trial to today for the counsels to submit whether a trial-within-a trial was necessary to expunge the statements which the counsels have objected to as they amounted to Azhar confessing to the murder charge.
