Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) officials have been monitoring the activities of a Road Transport Department (JPJ) state director suspected of soliciting bribes from driving schools and having close relations, or khalwat, with a female senior government official.

Acting on a tip-off that the director would be making his rounds in driving schools, demanding bribes from the driving school operators, ACA officers set up an ambush on Friday at the hotel where he stayed. He allegedly visited karaoke centres and other entertainment centres with his bills settled by the operators.

When the officers saw the JPJ director entering the hotel with the woman early Friday, they contacted the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council. Officers apprehended the two in the hotel room at 2:30am.

Two original copies of a police report made by ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin after he had interrogated accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar last year caused some confusion when the court discovered some details were not consistent.

This was detected when Azhar’s counsel Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin made a reference to the report and found that trial judge Justice Mohd Zaki Md Yasin had different details in his copy. There were a total of five inconsistencies.

Zulkarnain then clarified the matter when he explained that one was the original version of the report which he had lodged at 2pm on 7 November 2006 after he had interrogated and obtained new information from Azhar. The other report contained amendments to the original report.

He made the amendments in the electronic reporting system at the IT department of the Bukit Aman station at 7pm the same day.

The judge adjourned the trial to Wednesday.

A Pakistani man who worked as a security guard at Bandar Mahkota, Cheras, is wanted by the police to assist in investigations into the murder of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman student Tang Lai Meng. She was found half-naked on her bed with a pillow case around her neck. The Pakistani has not reported to work since Thursday when the crime happened.

Police are also looking for four women and a man, who were all Tang’s former housemates. All but one of the women studied at the UTAR Bandar Sungai Long campus. Statements have been taken from six people, including Tang’s 41-year-old businessman friend.

Tang’s mother, Kang Xue Sia, and father Tang Ah Weng were at the Serdang Hospital to claim her body. They had wanted her to study in Singapore, but bought her the house in Kuala Lumpur when she insisted on studying here.

The post-mortem showed that Tang had died of asphyxiation.
