Kek Huey Lian, aged 41, was found raped and murdered in her double-storey terrace house in Bayu Perdana, at 3:30pm yesterday. Police had answered her husband’s call when she did not answer the door. They found her naked on a mattress and her throat slit from ear to ear.

Police have not ruled out robbery as the room was ransacked. It is believed that more than one person is responsible and they might have entered the bedroom through an unlocked window along the roof. Kek’s maid and 4-year-old daughter were at a neighbour’s house at the time.

A man, believed to be a close relative, and two domestic helpers, one of whom worked for Kek’s neighbour, were detained and the case has been classified as murder.

June 2007 will be remembered for the highly charged murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu, a Mongolian model and language translator, who was shot twice and blown up with C-4 explosives in October 2006. The Shah Alam High Court has heard from various witnesses many sides of the story, revealing new and captivating information on the case. Although the key prosecution witnesses, Altantuya’s friend Uuriintuya Gal-Ochir and Altantuya’s cousins Namiraa Gerelmaa and Burmaa Oyunchimeg, have returned to Mongolia, the trial continues into July.

Johor was also thrown into the crime spotlight when a string of rape cases occurred nearly everyday. This led to some public protests against the lack of police crime prevention and timely response for help. Hopefully, the relevant authorities will lockdown on the situation and ensure public safety effectively.

The mastermind of the infamous Mamak Gang, 46-year-old Mohd Shariff Abu Bakar was arrested by police on Saturday and kept in police custody for one week to aid police investigations.

Shariff had been on the run for several years and is believed to be involved in more than 150 robberies worth more than RM50 million. His gang is suspected to be responsible for the RM47 million microchip heist at the Batu Maung Free Commercial Zone on 20 November 2006. Shariff and his brothers, Mohd Rozland, aged 49, and Mohd Yusof, aged 42, became famous in 1994 for the RM10 million gold bar heist at the Subang International Airport.

Shariff was driving along the North-South expressway towards Johor when a police patrol car detected that the road tax of the car had expired. The police officers tried to pull him over but Shariff sped off. He turned off into the Guthrie Highway and made a u-turn towards Ipoh on the expressway. 30 minutes later, Shariff lost control of his car during the chase and overturned near Rawang.

Shariff got out of the car and tried to escape on foot but was caught by the officers. The police found a police cap and ten fake road tax stickers in his car.
