RM32 Million Lottery Betting Syndicate Busted

A RM32 million lottery betting operation has been dealt with by the authorities when police raided a house in Taman Pasir Pelangi last Thursday at 6pm. The illegal syndicate had been in business for the past five months.

Two men and three women, aged between 30 and 47 years and believed to be Singaporeans, have been arrested in the house. Police seized four computers, two laptops, five fax machines, nine mobile phones, RM1,035 cash and S$4,800.

Police said that the syndicate had a monthly revenue of RM6.4 million in bets and had customers from Malaysia and neighbouring countries.

Mother and Grandmother Charged for Drug Trafficking

A pregnant housewife and her mother were charged yesterday for trafficking 882gm of heroin at a bank on 5 December 2008.

27-year-old Hwei Wen Chiu and 50-year-old Lim Ah Mooi, 50 are alleged to have committed the offence at the Beach Street branch of the RHB Bank Bhd at 11:20am that day. No plea was taken while Hwei’s mother was unrepresented.

Under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Acts 1952 carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction, states that no bail may be posted. Hwei’s lawyer Jagdeep Singh Deo applied to the court under Section 388(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code to allow Hwei bail because she is two months’ pregnant.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Nor Afidah Mohd Sarayany raised an objection to the application and Magistrate Noor Fadzila Ishak denied Hwei bail.

Jagdeep Singh then requested the court to fix an early mention date and that he would make a representation to the Attorney-General’s Chambers on the urgency of the case.

Noor Fadzila fixed 8 January 2009 for mention once the representation and the chemist’s report are ready.

Singaporean Drug Syndicate Masterminds Arrested

Singaporeans were found to be the two masterminds behind two drug trafficking syndicates that were busted on Tuesday. 13 members of the syndicates were arrested in separate raids conducted in Larkin Utama and Taman Century, including the seizure of drugs worth RM1.5 million.

Three of the suspects were Singaporeans and all of them were between 20 and 66 years old.

The authorities seized 26kg of ketamin, 6,890 Eramin 5 pills, 86g of syabu, 0.474kg of ephedrine and 50 ecstasy pills. Eight vehicles worth RM360,000, RM38,171 cash and S$14,845 cash were also seized from the suspects.

Police said that six of the suspects would be remanded until 20 December 2008 and charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952. Seven others are remanded under the Special Preventive Laws.
