Drug Traffickers Damaged Cars During Chase

22 March 2008
Kuala Lumpur

A high speed chase between police and three drug traffickers in Bangsar resulted in seven damaged cars belonging to residents of the Sri Pahang flats.

At 2am yesterday, a Brickfields anti-narcotics police unit was making its rounds when it caught sight of a Proton Waja vehicle with three suspicious men. When the police ordered the driver to stop, the driver sped off towards the flats.

The police gave chase and fired a few warning shots before they ended up in Lorong Maarof. There, the suspects ran off on foot but were later caught. One of the suspects was shot in the arm and was sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre for treatment.

Later, several packets of white powder believed to be ganja were found near the scene, which were probably thrown out of the suspects’ vehicle. Police also found a samurai sword in the car.

Asmawi Missing: 19-year-old SMS Sender Freed

22 March 2008
Kuala Lumpur

The 19-year-old man who allegedly attempted to extort RM5,000 from the family of missing 11-year-old Muhammad Asmawi Jalaludin was granted police bail yesterday. It is believed that he sent a short message to Asmawi’s sister on 12 March 2008 at 1:50pm.

The suspect, a Form Five student, was arrested at his house in Kota Kinabalu on 19 March 2008 and brought to the Brickfields police station for investigations.

The Deputy Public Prosecutor has said that as there is no strong evidence yet for the suspect to be charged in court, he has been released after his seven-day remand had ended. However, he may be re-arrested and charged if there is new evidence implicating him with the short message within the next two weeks.

The suspect was not allowed to return to Sabah but would have to stay with relatives here.

Nurin Murder Case: MCA Offers RM20,000 for Information

21 March 2008
Kuala Lumpur

In response to criticism that the police have given up on the murder case of 8-year-old Nurin Jazlin, MCA Public Service and Complaints Bureau chief Datuk Michael Chong has offered a RM20,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the killer.

Nurin was kidnapped on 20 August 2007 and later found sexually assaulted and murdered. Her body was found in a bag which was dropped off by a motorcyclist in Petaling Jaya a month later.

Chong appealed to this person to come forward with information leading to the arrest of the killer in exchange for the reward money. He assured that they can meet without police interference.

On Monday, Nurin’s father Jazimin Abdul Jalil said “Maybe if I was a kerabat diraja (royalty) or if Nurin was a police officer’s daughter, then they (police) might have treated the case differently. Since I’m just an ordinary person, they are not bothered about finding the culprit.”
