Multi-Million Illegal Betting Syndicates Busted

26 March 2008
Penang

Police have made their biggest bust on illegal betting syndicates this year with raids on three bet counting centres which have accepted about RM9 million worth of bets per month in George Town and Butterworth.

Last Wednesday, two men, aged 42 and 55 years, were arrested in connection with a syndicate operating in Air Itam while police seized hundreds of betting slips, 2 computers, 8 facsimile machines, 5 mobile phones and 2 telephones.

On Saturday, police raided two houses in Telok Air Tawar and Jalan Raja Uda in Butterworth and arrested 6 women and a man, aged between 26 and 53 years.

It is believed that the syndicates could rake in RM200,000 worth of bets for each draw. Police have identified the masterminds behind the syndicates.

Under Section 4A(a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953, the suspects arrested each faces a maximum fine of RM200,000 or a maximum jail term of 5 years, if convicted.

25 March 2008
Kuantan

Staff from the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital alerted police after they found bruises on a 1-year-old baby girl’s chest, who was brought there by a couple last Thursday at 11:30am. The girl was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police arrested the 23-year-old woman and her 25-year-old boyfriend on the same day on suspicion of causing the death of the girl.

A post-mortem revealed that the girl had died from severe internal bleeding at the abdomen, believed to be caused by a blunt object.

The woman, from Bukit Goh, has been unemployed after she separated from her husband last year while the boyfriend is an odd job worker from Chenderawasih. Both are being remanded for one week.

Altantuya Murder Trial: Altantuya May Have Been Shot

25 March 2008
Shah Alam

49-year-old Dr Zaleha Abd Manaf from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital was called to the witness stand in the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu yesterday where she said there were numerous traces of radio-opaque in the deceased’s bones, suggesting that she was injured by a powerful force such as a gunshot.

The consultant radiologist had analysed 13 x-ray films of Altantuya’s ribs, pelvis, spine and other bones. The white spots she had found are metal elements which show up in the films, as indicated in her report dated 20 November 2006.

Dr Zaleha added that as Dr Mohd Shah Mahmood, the hospital’s forensics head, had told her that the bones were cleaned before the x-rays were taken, she concluded that the metal elements were in the bones, not on the surface.

The hearing continues tomorrow.
