Months after 8-year-old Nurin Jazlin Jazimin was found murdered in a sports bag, police have arrested a 43-year-old drug addict and a 32-year-old security guard.

The drug addict was found along Lorong Haji Taib in the Chow Kit area on Saturday at 11pm following a tip-off. He is being investigated at the Bukit Aman police headquarters.

The security guard was nabbed at an abandoned building at Lot 252-254 along Jalan Tun Razak on Sunday at 10am. It is believed that this guard resembles the photofit of Nurin’s kidnapper released by the police and he also owns a black Modenas Kriss motorcycle. Closed-circuit television footage at the scene where the sports bag was found showed the suspect riding a similar motorcycle.

The motorcycle from the guard, who is from Kampung Paya Jaras, Sungai Buloh, and his mobile phone, two SIM cards, two helmets and a jacket were seized by the police.

It is believed that one of the rooms in the abandoned building was cleaned up and furnished with a television, cupboard and a mattress. The room had an attached bathroom.

Police brought four girls who were victims of the “Kampung Baru molester” to the building at 3:40pm yesterday and left ten minutes later.

As the search for 5-year-old Sharlinie Mohd Nashar continues into its fourth day, officers from the Rantau Panjang Umno division and the Community Development Department (Kemas) have been distributing photos of Sharlinie at the border duty free shops and immigration checkpoints.

Sharlinie has been missing from a playground in Taman Medan since Wednesday.

At the Family Day for staff of the Prime Minister’s office at Seri Perdana, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi made a plea to the abductors to return Sharlinie to her parents and reminded parents to be extra careful with children wandering around.

Yesterday, several notable people visited Sharlinie’s parents at their home in Taman Medan. Wife of the Prime Minister, Datin Paduka Seri Jeanne Abdullah, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and Celcom Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly were all present to offer support to parents Mohd Nashar Mat Hussain and Suraya Ahmad.

Shazalli said that Celcom is sending photos of Sharlinie to its six million subscribers via multimedia messaging on mobile phones.

Last night at 10pm, a doll was found perched on a concrete signage about 100 metres from Sharlinie’s home. The doll, believed to be Sharlinie’s, was dressed in yellow. Witnesses said that a man came out from a speeding black Proton Wira and placed the doll there.

Police have taken the doll away for investigations. Suraya fainted several times when she heard about the doll.

Following Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai’s pledge of RM5,000, Selangor Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation vice- president M. Jayabarathi and an anonymous datuk pledged RM2,000 and RM5,000 respectively. MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong’s company GMH Property Sdn Bhd chipped in RM5,000.

Business tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan has topped up the total reward amount to RM100,000 by pledging RM83,000.

Police have received reports sighting Sharlinie in Klang, Selangor and Butterworth, leading them to believe that the abductor is still in the country.

Hundreds of calls and short messages have been received by the police and the parents of 5-year-old Sharlinie Mohd Nashar and police are following up on every one of them.

Sharlinie went missing from a playground near her house in Taman Medan on Wednesday.

Police said that task force teams have been sent to investigate tip offs and perform continuous surveillance in the areas where Sharlinie was reportedly sighted.

Several witnesses in Taman Medan said they saw a man who resembled the photofit at the playground. He was riding on a motorcycle with another man, and seemed to be looking for someone. The men then rode off.

In addition to the earlier tip offs on Sharlinie being spotted at the Puduraya bus terminal and a bus stop in Butterworth, police are checking the closed-circuit television recordings at the New Pantai Expressway toll plaza near Taman Medan, hoping to find the black car that Sharlinie’s sister, Sharliena, described in the press conference previously.

Meanwhile Jazimin Abdul Jalil, the father of 8-year-old Nurin who was sexually assaulted and found murdered in a sports bag last September, visited Sharlinie’s parents and spent several hours with them yesterday at Taman Medan.

He said he found the photofits released by the police for Nurin and Sharlinie to be similar.

The General Operations Force North Brigade has been helping the task force to distribute posters of the girl and the photofit of the suspect at the border towns in the north.

Security staff along the Malaysian and Thai border at Rantau Panjang has been helping in the search since Wednesday, checking all vehicles and passenger boats. Posters have been distributed at the border and at illegal jetties such as those at Pauh and Gergaji. A team even went across the border to notify the Thai army.

In George Town, the Penang Gerakan service bureau is offering a RM3,000 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to Sharlinie’s whereabouts. The bureau has distributed 1,000 posters in Penang, especially to residents’ associations, Rukun Tetangga sectors and coffee shops. The bureau can be contacted at 04-1192724 or 016-4864722.
