The state commercial crimes unit has remanded a 41-year-old lawyer on Sunday at his home in Parit Semerah, Pontian, for allegedly cheating clients of RM746,000.

The unit chief said that the suspect had swindled seven clients over housing deals made between 1999 and 2001. He had allegedly taken clients’ money meant as payment for the housing developers. As a result, the clients were unable to own the houses.

Authorities believe that the lawyer may have accomplices. He faces a maximum jail term of 20 years, caning and a fine.

38-year-old Zulkarnain Awang and his 34-year-old wife Norhayati Md Amin have been charged for abusing their five children aged between one and eight years at their Kampung Tanjung Sedili home on 5 December 2007 at 2pm.

The 3 boys and 2 girls were allegedly physically and emotionally abused by their parents. The parents have been charged with the offence under Section 31(1)(A) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a RM20,000 fine or 10-year imprisonment, or both, if convicted.

Bail was set at RM6,000 with two sureties for each accused, but neither of them were able to raise bail. The hearing has been set on 18 February 2008.

A lance corporal from the city police serious crimes division (D9) was on his way to work on Friday at 5am when six men armed with sticks assaulted and robbed him along Jalan Kuching. The policeman in his 20s was robbed of his .38 caliber service revolver, cash and an authority card.

The suspects were in a car trailing the victim who was riding his motorcycle. He suffered a broken arm and serious bruises on his chest and head. He is reported to be in a stable condition in the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

A police task force has been set up to hunt down the six men.
