Police hauled up 82 people aged between 15 and 38 years old in a pre-dawn four-hour operation on Sunday for illegal racing. Four women and students were among those arrested and 77 motorcycles were seized. Some of the illegal motorcycle racers, also known as Mat Rempit, more managed to escape on foot after abandoning their motorcycles.

106 summonses were issued including 57 for reckless riding, 43 for not stopping when ordered to by uniformed personnel and 43 for beating the red light. Police also issued summonses for offences related to vehicle licences, road tax, insurance, registration number plates and illegal vehicle modifications.

One suspect tested positive for syabu.

The suspects had to push their motorcycles from Jalan Tun Dr Ismail to the Ipoh traffic police station along Jalan Chamberlain.

A 14-year-old girl was with her mother at a sundry shop when two men in their 20s approached her to chat on Wednesday at 1:30pm. The men then abducted her to their rented room of a shop house a few units away from the sundry shop at Taman Wira.

The girl resisted their attempts to molest her and jumped out of a window of the double-storey building, sustaining cuts in her arms and sprained ankles.

After the girl reported the incident to her mother, the two suspects were apprehended. Police are now looking for two more men.

As the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu continued on its 66th day yesterday, former post-blast investigation section head DSP Muhammad Koey Abdullah expounded on the technicalities of explosives related to the case.

He explained that based on the high amount of RDX found, it was a “high explosion”. However, there was no crater found in the ground of the crime scene, therefore only a small amount of explosive could have been used.

Although a claymore mine wire was found there, Muhammad Koey said a claymore mine was not used. Instead, its wire was probably used as an accessory. If such a mine had been used, a crater would have been formed and ball bearings would have been found.

Muhammad Koey added that personnel from the Bomb Disposal Unit, General Operations Force and Special Operations Forces are given basic training in handling bombs. After they have gone through basic and advanced courses, they are required to follow strict usage procedures.

The trial continues on Monday.
