ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin told the court yesterday that he took more than a month to correct mistakes in a police report he had lodged on the seizures of murder victim Altantuya Shaariibuu’s belongings which were allegedly found in accused Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar’s apartment in Kota Damansara. The 23rd prosecution witness also admitted to trial judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin that the delay was due to his oversight.

Zulkarnain had wrote in the report that at 7pm on 7 November 2006, he had seized Azhar’s jacket and Altantuya’s jewellery from flat number “5-2-4”. He admitted in court that the address was wrong as he assumed it from information in a utility bill which he took from Azhar’s apartment. He said it should have been “5-3-7”.

When re-examined by deputy public prosecutor Tun Abd Majid Tun Hamzah, Zulkarnain said he realized the mistake at 11:30pm after reading through the report on the same day he handed over the items to investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan. He tried to call the Bukit Aman IT division to correct the mistake but no one answered. He said he only managed to amend it on 13 December 2006.

Zulkarnain told Wong Kian Kheong, who is appearing for accused political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, that he had thrown away the bill. He did not record this event in his investigation diary and thus could not recall if he had thrown it or passed it to Lunggan.

Tun Hamzah told the court that if all went well, he should be able to complete his prosecution case by September.

A bogus spiritual healer have been caught by police on suspicion of raping a 12-year-girl in a commune in Ulu Tiram on Tuesday. Commonly known as “Nandu Bala”, the man had been taking advantage of women in the area who sought treatment and was surrounded by bodyguards.

The family of the girl had went to consult the suspect two years ago. They allegedly had to stay in a hostel at the commune in Kampung Oren for him to treat them. The family lived there between May 2005 to July 2006. The girl revealed that she and a few others were forced to take flower baths, join in group chants and dancing, and watch pornographic video with the suspect.

One night the girl followed a friend to a hostel room where she was tied to a bed and allegedly raped by the suspect. After the girl’s father decided to escape from the commune with his family, he found a letter written by her daughter recounting the incident.

Last July, the girl’s father began to realise that the man was making use of him and his family and decided to escape from the commune with his family.

Johor Baru (South) Criminal Investigation Department chief Deputy Superintendent Nor Hashim Mohammad confirmed the arrest.

Eight men were caught red-handed for stealing equipment from a telecommunications transmission tower in a Paloh plantation here. Police were alerted by the control centre of the telecommunications operator when they detected a disturbance at that tower at 2:30am.

The men were breaking into the tower when they were arrested and their van seized. Two walkie-talkies and some electronic equipment were also found with them.

The suspects are responsible for about RM2 million worth of equipment theft. They would travel in a van with Tenaga Nasional Bhd markings. They have been stealing batteries and back-up generators in 17 cases over Johor, Malacca and Negri Sembilan.

The group of men, aged between 16 and 30 years, have been remanded till Saturday.
