Education officer Ahmad Hasnal Abdullah was sentenced yesterday to jail and fined after the Sessions Court found him guilty of corruption.

The 37-year-old man was sentenced to 32 months’ jail and fined RM20,000 for receiving RM28,220 when he informed his supervisor and made a false government declaration that he had to organize training courses in schools in 2001.

For claiming to run an “Administration and Financial Assistance” course in Gombak schools for RM13,780 and a similar course for RM14,440, Ahmad was further sentenced to 12 months’ jail and fined RM10,000, and 18 months’ jail and fined RM10,000 respectively.

The judge set the terms to run concurrently. Ahmad’s counsel asked for a stay of execution pending an appeal to the High Court. The judge granted the stay and set bail at RM12,000 in one surety.

A 43-year-old burger seller has claimed trial yesterday for the charge of raping his 13-year-old stepdaughter. He allegedly raped the girl in his house in Kampung Puah Seberang, at 3:30am in December 2003.

The judge allowed bail at RM30,000 with two sureties and set 14 to 16 January 2008 for trial. The man has been warned not to harass the victim and must report to the nearest police station at noon every Monday.

It is believed that the main suspects of the murder of the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman student Tang Lai Meng had been watching the her house for some time. Three brothers and their unemployed 34-year-old uncle, who are now in police remand, have been observing that the 20-year-old undergraduate was staying along in the Bandar Mahkota Cheras house.

The four had stayed in a house near to the victim. When they saw Tang returning home in her Toyota Vios on 2 August 2007, they broke into the house via the back door. Tang was probably held down by more than one person as a medical report suggests. They had initially wanted to rob Tang, but instead they decided to rape and murder her.

The uncle broke his house arrest in Temerloh under the Restricted Residence Act last year and escaped to stay with his three nephews. The victim’s car has been recovered and the laptop computer and mobile phone from third parties who bought them.

The Pakistani security guards who were arrested earlier will be handed over to the Immigration Department as they did not have valid work permits.
