Security Guard Jailed for Killing Burglar

1 February 2007
Kuala Lumpur

Abdul Rahman Abdullah, aged 27, was a security guard of a construction site at Green Avenue in Jalan Shelly. Yesterday, he was sentenced to six years’ jail for causing the death of Wong Peng Kuan at the Cheras site on 14 March 2007.

Wong, aged 39, broke into the site at around 8:30pm that night, and was stealing metal pieces. Abdul Rahman and his colleague, J. Selvamani, caught Wong and tied him up. When Wong tried to escape, Abdul Rahman chased and hit him on the head with a plank several times. Wong collapsed on the roadside.

Abdul Rahman called for an ambulance to escort Wong to the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia at 9pm. Wong died from head injuries two days later.

In court, Abdul Rahman’s lawyer asked for leniency as his client called for the ambulance when he saw that Wong was bleeding and as such had no intention of killing him.

The national crime rate last year increased by 15.74 per cent. Every state reported an increase except Kedah.

Commercial crime increased from 171,604 to 198,622 cases. Commercial crime was 10% of all cases last year, while property crime took up almost 70%. Motorcycle and lorry thefts were the most common property crimes committed, and half of such culprits were the unemployed and drug addicts.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s department Datuk Maximus Ongkili said the police’s solving rate is 50 per cent, compared to the Interpol’s rate of 22 per cent. Ongkili, who is the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) chairman, said the foundation will conduct a road show two weeks from now to raise awareness of crime prevention during the Chinese New Year festivities.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan has effected several programs to curb the worrying trend:

  • Senior police officers assigned to desk duties have to do foot patrols in the city
  • Recruitment of 60,000 new officers
  • Addition of 2,000 new police cars
