Taxi Robbers Nabbed in High Speed Chase

13 March 2008
Kuala Lumpur

The armed robbers who have been preying on taxi drivers have been caught after a high-speed chase on Tuesday night in Sungai Mas, Jalan Ipoh. They are believed to be the robbers who slashed and robbed a 62-year-old taxi driver in Bukit Segambut on Tuesday afternoon.

At around 9pm, two locals and a Bangladeshi had robbed a 37-year-old taxi driver in Kuang after getting on his taxi in Rawang. The taxi driver was tied to a tree in a rubber estate there after he was robbed of his belongings.

A police patrol detected the three suspects behaving suspiciously in the taxi at 10:45pm and gave chase. The suspects lost control of the taxi 10km later in Bukit Tunku and ran to a jungle on foot. The suspects were caught soon after and police seized a parang, a balaclava, a leather wallet containing two identity cards and two mobile phones belonging to taxi drivers.

One of the suspects had 8 records related to drug offences. Further investigations revealed that another taxi that was stolen at the Selayang wholesale market involved the three suspects.

Manslaughter Charge Against Maid Reduced

12 March 2008
Putrajaya

An Indonesian maid was in the Federal Court where the manslaughter charge against her was reduced to causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon. 26-year-old Herlina Trisnawati was convicted of murdering her 32-year-old employer Soon Lay Chuan on 14 August 2001 at 3pm in Subang Jaya.

Herlina, from Surabaya, was slapped with the murder charge by the Shah Alam High Court on 4 November 2004. A year later, the Court of Appeal overturned the ruling and reduced the charge to manslaughter.

The Sabah Chief Judge and Federal Court judges agreed that the manslaughter charge against Herlina could not be sustained and gave her a 10-year jail term from the date of arrest. There was no evidence suggesting that Herlina had caused Soon’s death.

The judges did state that there was adequate circumstantial evidence to show that Herlina must have inflicted injuries on Soon using a weapon.
