Armed Robbers Preying on Taxi Drivers

12 March 2008
Kuala Lumpur

Two armed robbers have been preying on taxi drivers in the city with the latest incident occurring in Bukit Segambut yesterday at 1:30pm. The two suspects are believed to be drug addicts, one wearing a taxi driver’s uniform and the other acting as a passenger.

62-year-old Lim Woon Siah had picked them up in his taxi from Taman Wahyu in Selayang. The suspects asked him to drive to Bukit Segambut. The uniformed suspect who was in the front passenger seat ordered Lim to stop when they reached there.

The other suspect then slashed Lim’s neck with a parang and robbed him of cash and other valuables. Lim resisted and exited the taxi, where he was slashed again on the wrist. Members of the public were alerted and came to Lim’s aid while the suspects fled in his taxi.

Lim sought treatment at a nearby clinic and lodged a police report at Mont Kiara. He had lost his wallet, RM150 cash, mobile phone and the rented taxi from Kepong Baru.

Police believe that the suspects were responsible for several other cases reported in the Klang Valley and are now looking for a red and white Proton Saga taxi with the number plate HWB9701.

International Drug Trafficking Syndicate Busted, Five Arrested

12 March 2008
Kuala Lumpur

An international drug trafficking syndicate has been busted with the arrest of five syndicate members on Monday at 5:30pm along Jalan Chow Kit. Three African and two Pakistani men aged between 25 and 39 years were arrested and 2.9kg of cocaine worth RM600,000 were seized.

The syndicate has been operating in Malaysia as a transit point for several years and the seized drugs were not meant for the local market. Two of the Africans entered the country on student visas while the Pakistani men were believed to be transporters as they arrived on Sunday using travel visas.

The suspects were remanded until 17 March 2008 and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act. Police believe that this syndicate is related to another syndicate caught earlier this month which used students to smuggle drugs.

Rapist Gets Jail Time, Spared Whipping

11 March 2008
Putrajaya

Mohamad Ibrahim was charged for raping a 16-year-old teenager in Kota Baru and sentenced to 10 years’ jail and 10 strokes of the cane on 23 June 1992 but was spared from the whipping when his appeal was dismissed yesterday in the Court of Appeal.

Mohamad and Kamaruddin Ramli were jointly charged with raping the girl in Guchil, Kota Baru on 5 June 1989 between 2:30pm and 3:30pm. The two men had abducted the girl into a car while she was walking home from a post office that day. She was later blindfolded and raped by them. Kamaruddin jumped bail and is missing.

Two days after the incident, the girl was led to the house where she was raped. She also identified the two during a police parade.

Mohamad, now 52 years old, escaped whipping because the Criminal Procedure Code states that men above the age of 50 cannot be whipped. Mohamad was on RM5,000 bail pending appeal against his conviction and sentence.
