Football Betting Syndicate Uncovered

A couple was arrested during a raid on a bungalow in Kahang, Kluang, on Thursday, suspected to be involved in an illegal football betting syndicate. Computers, modems and printers were seized at the premises.

The syndicate is believed to have been making RM15 million a month from matches in the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and World Cup.

Police are still looking for other suspects related to the case.

Bangladeshi Abductors Posed as Policemen

Five men were sentenced to jail and spared capital punishment after they pleaded guilty to abducting and wrongfully confining Bangladeshi Saiful Kibria Md Hedayat Ullah, aged 30 years, at a house in Jalan Kapar, Klang, on 30 January 2004.

At least two people have been victimised by the gang of eight Bangladeshis and locals, as they posed as policemen and abducted them. They would rob, chain, blindfold and assault them for days before releasing them.

Bangladeshis Abdullah Mamun Abdul Manan, aged 36, Abdul Rahim Yusuf, aged 37, Mohammad Kokon Mia, aged 31, and Malaysians Abdul Rahim Shah Golbal Shah, aged 48, and Mohammad Anuar Arshad, aged 29, were jailed. Three other suspects are still at large.

Abdul Rahim Yusuf and Abdul Rahim Shah were sentenced to five years’ jail each. Abdullah Mamun, Mohammad Kokon and Mohammad Anuar were sentenced to four years’ jail starting from the date of their arrests.

The five are expected to be sentenced next week for another similar charge against the second victim.

Shearwey Murder Case: Prosecution Withdraws Case

Justice Abdul Rahim Uda yesterday saw that the prosecution decided to withdraw the murder case of 3-year-old Shearwey Ooi Ying Ying after the death of the accused killer and former karaoke outlet manager Ong Chee Leong under Section 254(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code. The girl’s remains shall be returned to her family to perform funeral rites.

29-year-old Ong was accused of murdering Shearwey at the Sri Impian Apartment in Lengkok Angsana, Bandar Baru Air Itam, between 7:30am and 6:30pm on 5 July 2007.

The hearing was scheduled for 26 and 27 March 2008 but counsel Jagdeep Singh Deo, who represented Shearwey’s family, requested for an earlier date after Ong was found hanged in his prison clinic on 18 February 2008.

30-year-old Ooi Eng Chew, the father of the murdered girl, was advised by Jagdeep Singh that he would expedite the release of Shearwey’s remains.
