Altantuya Murder Trial: General Manager Clears Confusion

19 February 2008
Shah Alam

Nik Kamarudin Nik Ka from the Celcom Core Network Operations division testified at the High Court during the murder trial of Altantuya Shaariibuu yesterday, confirming the call transaction data of accused Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri.

The 43-year-old general manager said he retraced six transactions that have been challenged on their accuracy. Nik Kamarudin was shown two documents containing data on mobile phone calls and text messages sent by Azilah, which indicated Azilah had been at the murder scene and had been in contact with the two co-accused.

Nik Kamarudin said after his review of the data, he found that six short messages received by Azilah were not in the records extracted by Celcom executive Mohd Firdaous Mohd Omar but were found in the billings record retrieved by Celcom systems analyst Syed Mustaqim bin Syed Yusoff.

He explained that the discrepancies are due to the exchange where the data was retrieved from. On 17 October 2006, five of six short messages involving Azilah’s mobile phone were captured at the Atabara, Kuantan, exchange while the other was at the Semambu exchange.

The trial continues today.

Shearwey Murder Case: Accused Found Dead in Prison

19 February 2008
Penang

Prison warders found former karaoke outlet manager Ong Chee Leong hanged at the Penang Prison along Jalan Gaol yesterday at 5:10pm. It is believed that the 29-year-old had hanged himself using a bed sheet and a beam.

He was still alive when warders brought him down and tried to revive him by performing cardio pulmonary resuscitation, but he died soon after.

Ong was charged with the murder of 3-year-old Shearwei Ooi Ying Ying at an apartment in Lengkok Angsana, Bandar Baru Air Itam, between 7.30am and 6.30pm on 5 July 2007. He was arrested on 8 July 2007 and his trial had been fixed for mention in High Court on 26 and 27 March 2008.

Ong was brought to the clinic from his prison cell for treatment after prison authorities noticed that he had been depressed for the past few days. Police have ruled out foul play and classified the case as sudden death. Ong’s body has been sent to the Penang Hospital for a post-mortem.

Ying Ying’s father, 29-year-old Ooi Eng Chew, said he was shocked to learn about Ong’s death and hopes that the prosecution can apply to withdraw the murder charge so that his daughter’s remains can be returned to him.

Ong’s lawyer, S. Rethinakumar, was informed of his death by the prison authorities. Rethinakumar said he last spoke to Ong on 1 February 2008 and that he was supposed to visit Ong on Friday.
