A group of seven men, including a Taiwanese, have been arrested on suspicion of short message scams involving at least RM1 million. The numerous scams were reported in Johor, Selangor, Penang, Negri Sembilan and Perak.

The scam syndicate would send short messages to victims notifying them of some prize winnings and required them to deposit money into a bank account as administration fees before they could claim them.

Amounts between RM1,000 and RM37,000 were deposited by the victims. 14 victims deposited RM85,000 between 1 and 15 March 2008 as they were promised luxury cars and cash prizes related to the Petronas Super Car Craze promotion, which had since ended.

The men were picked up at Sungei Week two weeks ago and are remanded by the police.

A 48-year-old man was suspected of rape and molest of a 10-year-old girl which caused over 30 neighbours of a low-cost flat in Section 8, Kota Damansara, to assault him yesterday.

A resident happened to walk by the lift on the ninth floor when he saw the Year Four girl in the nude and the suspect forcing himself onto her at 2:20pm. It is learnt that the faulty lift door always opens on the ninth floor. When the resident shouted at the suspect, the latter fled from the lift.

The resident then informed the girl’s family who stayed on the 17th floor. When they came down to the ninth floor, they found the girl crying. The girl gave a description of the man who was identified as a resident staying on the eighth floor. She also revealed that the man had grabbed her from the lift and had taken her to a vacant flat unit where he raped and molested her.

The group went to the man’s flat and confronted him. He claimed he was at home shaving at the time. When the girl identified the man as the suspect, the group dragged the man to the ground floor where they repeated assaulted him.

The suspect was later handed over to the police and was brought to the Sungai Buloh Hospital with multiple bruises and cuts. The girl has been warded at the Universiti Malaya Medical Center for a medical examination.

A 30-year-old woman, who works as a hypermarket salesgirl and is a mother of three, claimed that she was blackmailed into having sex with two men on Friday.

The woman had been seeing a man known to her only as Zul for the past month after she and her husband seperated half a year ago. She visited the man on Friday at 2am at his Sungai Nibong flat. The two other men were at the flat at the time.

The man then threatened to distribute a video clip of them having oral sex if she refused to have sex with the other two men. After the incident, the woman lodged a report at the Sungai Nibong police station and went to the Penang Hospital for a check-up.

Police have classified the case as rape under Section 376 of the Penal Code and are looking for the three suspects.
