Kuala Lumpur

43-year-old Nazli Dain posed as an assistant to former Deputy Home Minister Datuk Zainal Abidin Zin and received RM25,000 in bribes in order to release illegal foreign workers. As a result, he was sentenced yesterday to 8 months’ jail and fined RM1250,000.

The businessman was found guilty of receiving RM10,000 from furniture factory owner Sim Chong Chaw at the Hotel Grand Central coffeehouse along Jalan Putera on 30 November 2001 between 11am and 1pm. Nazli later also received RM15,000 from Sim via his accomplice, 63-year-old Lim Yip Kong, near the National Museum on the same day at 3pm.

The bribe acted as an inducement to reduce the compound amount on Sim and his five illegal foreign workers, as well as to release the workers and obtain work permits for them.

Lim, a contractor, was sentenced to 9 months’ jail and fined RM250,000 for two counts of abetting Nazli and a bribery charge.

The judge increased their bails from RM5,000 to RM10,000 in two sureties.
