Bukit Aman and Selangor police have been working closely with Interpol, Aseanapol and the Customs Department to smash one of the biggest car theft syndicates in Malaysia. 17 people, 3 of whom are Singaporeans, were arrested and 45 luxury vehicles worth RM5 million have been recovered from Singapore.
Three syndicate members were nabbed on 11 December 2007, which led to the arrest of 14 more people, all aged between 25 and 35 years old and were from Johor and Singapore. Two of them have been placed under the Emergency Ordinance while the rest have been charged in court.
It is believed that Singapore was one of the transit points for stolen cars from Malaysia before they are shipped to the Hong Kong, Middle East, Europe and South Africa. The syndicate would act as repossessors or carjack vehicles before shipping them in containers using false documents and fake registration numbers.
The stolen vehicles were mostly four-wheel-drive models such as Nissan X-Trail, Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Frontier and Honda CRV. They have been handed over to 17 representatives of insurance companies.
