Village Mall Jewellery Shop Robbed RM60,000

Four robbers armed with two pistols took three minutes to rob a jewellery shop inside Village Mall on Friday at 9:20pm and got away with RM60,000 worth of jewellery.

One of the robbers guarded the entrance to the shop while the other three confronted six salesgirls inside. The robbers were wearing helmets and long-sleeved jackets. The robbers smashed the showcases with hammers, scooped jewellery into their bags and escaped on two motorcycles parked outside of the mall.

A mall security rushed to the scene but retreated when he saw one of the robbers armed with a pistol while he was unarmed.

Police are investigating this case together with another jewellery shop robbery at a hypermarket in the same area on 11 January 2008. Both shops are owned by the same person.

Businessman in Online Investment Scam

Phazaluddin Abu became the first person to be produced in court by the Securities Commission (SC) for unlawfully representing himself as a fund manager through a website. The 47-year-old general manager of a computer company claimed trial to the charge.

It is believed that over 100 Malaysians have invested RM65 million over three months via the website, www.danafutures.com, where Phazaluddin allegedly represented himself as a fund manager without a license from the SC. He was accused of committing the offence Affiliate Shoppers Network at No. 14 Jalan Opera C, Shah Alam between 3 January and 22 June 2007.

The website offered investments opportunities between US$25 and $1,000 for 100 days, promising returns of between 2.2% to 3.15% daily. The operation was shut down on 22 June 2007.

The judge set bail at RM200,000 in one surety and ordered Phazaluddin to surrender his passport. The trial has been also been fixed for five days from 3 November 2008.

Bank Negara Staff Charged with Accepting Bribes

51-year-old Mahathir Shahabudin previously from Bank Negara’s Property and Services department was charged in court with five counts of accepting bribes amounting to RM26,985 from two directors. The suspended Housekeeping Unit employee claimed trial to all charges.

The first charge was against Mahathir accepting RM300 via his Maybank bank account from First Choices Services director Anuar Paharudin as an inducement to retain the company’s refuse disposal contract at the Jalan Tun Perak branch on 18 November 2005 at 2:06pm.

He was then alleged to have received RM300 from Anuar for the same contract at the same branch location on 2 December 2005 at 4:47pm. On 20 October 2005 at 1pm, Mahathir allegedly accepted another RM800 from Anuar for the same purpose.

The fourth charge was about Mahathir receiving RM8,575 in a cheque that he deposited into the same bank account which was given by Indramuz Sdn Bhd director Azhar Ibrahim on 30 December 2005 as an inducement to call the company to do the carpet cleaning jobs at Bank Negara.

Finally, Mahathir was alleged to have accepted a RM17,010 cheque from Azhar for the same purpose at the same place on 16 February 2006.

Mahathir faces a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of five times the amount of the bribes for each charge if he is found guilty under Section 16 of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997. On 29 May 2007, he also claimed trial to eight bribery charges at the Ampang Sessions Court.

The judge set bail at RM10,000 for all charges and set two days from 13 August 2008 for hearing.
